Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Hairy Squat Lobster, Fairy Lobster, Barrel-sponge Crab, and Fairy Crab. They feed on zooplankton, and grow to a length of about 1.4cm.

Habitat:

Found in sponges (Xestospongia) on coral and rocky reefs, in the Western Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

It was almost impossible to detect these critters, camouflaged as they were in the crevices of the barrel sponge. I was able to photograph this pair (yes, there were two of them) at a depth of about 15m.
