Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Tropical Bottletail Squid, Bobtail Squid, Koch's Bottletail Squid and Orange Bottletail Squid. They feed nocturnally on fish and crustaceans, and grow to a length of about 3cm. This squid changes color when predators approach.

Habitat:

Found in shallow coastal waters and lagoons often buried in the sand or muck bottoms with just the eyes showing. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

When my dive buddy spotted this, it was nearly the color of the sand, but changed to a bright orange by the time I got to snap its pictures. Photos taken during a night dive, at a depth of about 15m.
