small town on the northern Great Plains

Thanks Allen! Appearance is actually a sufficient basis for many species.
Thanks for the ID suggestion, J. I know that appearance alone is insufficient basis for determining species ID, but given the similarities between the appearance of my spotting and of images available online, and given your apparent expertise, I'm going with Hyles euphorbiae.
