Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Pale Shrimpgoby, Fierce Shrimpgoby, Sandy Prawngoby and Sandy Partner Goby. They live symbiotically with shrimp, which takes care of keeping house; the goby's role is to signal when predators come too close.

They feed on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton, and grow to about 7.5cm in length.

Habitat:

Found with Alpheus djiboutensis Snapping Shrimp usually in pairs in shallow lagoons on mixed white sand flats and rubble areas. They are widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

The shrimpgoby is seen here with its "housekeeper" shrimp, the Fine-striped Snapping Shrimp (Alpheus ochrostriatus).
