Field Notes

Description:

The male has a large colorful beak making it easy to identify. The plumage is black with white patches on the forehead and back of the head. The female seen in pics 2 and 4 has a dark bill and small white patches on the side of her head. The Surf scoter is a sea duck whose breeding range is in northern Canada and Alaska. They winter along the Pacific and Atlantic Coast of North America.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Billy Frank Jr Nisqually River NWR in Washington State. This protected refuge provides several habitats for water and migrating birds.
