Field Notes

Description:

This gorgeous iridescent beetle was seen on the nibbled leaves of its host plant (Apocynum sp.) from which it derives its name. Larva are obligate feeders on the roots, while adults eat the leaves of dogbane.

Habitat:

Transcontinental North America (ME-WA to GA-AZ) but primarily east of Rocky Mountains wherever host plants are found. Often found in open, disturbed areas, or along forest edges, lakeshores, and areas with gravelly soil.

Notes:

Spotted near the overlook of Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area
