Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Molluscs, Clams, Maxima Clam, Tridacna Clam, Tridacna Giant Clam, Common Giant Clam and Rugose Clam.

Their mantle varies in color. They feed on plankton.

Giant clam provide a vital service in coral reefs: they filter tons of sea water per day, and in doing so, keep their environment conducive for the growth and survival of other marine life.

Habitat:

Found between coral heads or in depressions. They occur in shallow waters, from 5 to 15m deep. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

This particular clam appears to be a juvenile, although it measured about a meter long.

It's very rare now to see giant clam in the wild in these parts. It's certainly a delight each time I see one underwater.
