Field Notes
Description:
Had a visit from this woodpecker on the edge of our garden. (1st spotting here) Female due to black under the eye. Shot out of my office window (800mm on my Canon zoom - difficult because of scrub) light snow outside and poor light before lunch. Length 43cm (17inch) Wingspan 74cm ( 29 inch) Hammering its head into this tree. Voice very distinctive ringing series of descending, accelerating dah notes - laughing quality - also repeats wok call and nasal yelps around nest.
Habitat:
Old hardwood forest.
