Field Notes

Description:

An unmistakable butterfly with black and iridescent blue parallel bands on the top of wings. The wingspan is 64–76 mm (2.5–3.0 in). The underside of wings in pic 3 (darker butterfly in the center of picture).

Habitat:

Spotted on a tree along a shaded trail in a wooded area at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas.

Notes:

Range from S. Texas to South America. Adults feed on rotting fruit.
