Field Notes

Description:

An all-white plumage with black legs and a long black bill. It has yellow feet and yellow lores (the area between the bill and eyes). They are smaller than the Great blue heron, Great egret, and the Reddish Egret (white morph - which it can be confused with) also the Reddish Egret white morph has a pink and black bill. These are amazing hunters and can use many different foraging techniques and hoovering styles to find prey. They mostly eat fish, crustaceans, insects, small reptiles, snails, frogs, worms and crayfish.

Habitat:

Spotted foraging at Smiley Lagoon along the San Diego River in San Diego, California.
