Field Notes

Description:

The leaves on this specimen are so long it's hard to see the maple-like shape of the leaves that contributed "heartleaf" to its common name. Also, I have never seen one with such densely packed racemes. It gave me pause to wonder if it's a hybrid with a cultivated or native Astilbe relative.

Canada: NB , NS , ON , QC
Native Distribution: N.B. to s. Ont. & MI, s. to GA & MS
Native Habitat: Cool, moist, deciduous woods; stream banks

Spotted in the Cohutta Wilderness Area
