Field Notes

Description:

Was a huge fungus. The first thing I noticed was the mushroom smell as we walked past. A ten minute search in ever increasing circles bought me to this. I wish I had known it was edible. The hand belongs to Anka Bitenc a mushroom enthusiast as well.

Habitat:

This is the first reported occurance of this fungi in New Zealand.; This was growing on the side of a Beech tree. I can only guess as to how it got here, I assume the spores were on the pack of a tourist who did the Milford track having come from a tramping trip in the US.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (2)

Hi Clive, Feel free to convince me otherwise.
Hi Clive, I did not come to this conclusion by myself, two Mycologists agreed with my identification. The colouring is there and this particular specimen wass getting old, so the form is not so defined as you would see in a younger specimen. Will go back this coming Autumn to take more photo's.
