Field Notes

Description:

This is a young Black-winged Stilt. Like the adults it has rather long pink legs and a black bill. "Young Black-winged Stilts lack black on the back of the neck and have grey-brown wings and back, speckled with white. They have a smudged grey crown, which extends down the back of the neck as the birds get older." (Birdlife Australia: http://birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/black-winged-stilt )

Habitat:

Foraging for a feed at the Mankajarra wetlands.

Notes:

This youngster was hanging out with two others quite close to the edge of the water. It was a lot of fun watching them moving around for food and listening to them when they called out.
