Field Notes

Description:

Large male sea turtle, carapace at least 4 feet long, exiting cave.

Habitat:

Near shore tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotted about 60 feet deep off of Keaau Beach Park on Leeward Oahu; I had started into a cave while on a dive; the large turtle inside decided to leave at the same time. I thought I was looking bows-on at the starship Enterprise leaving space dock. All I could do was get out of the way. Once I was clear, there was no time to adjust my camera settings but I took a photo anyway, before the turtle swam out of sight--better something than nothing. The result was badly underexposed and even after using Photoshop, the result (posted here) was not much improved. Original medium photoprint, taken with Nikonos V using flash; print subsequently scanned and image saved as digital file.
