Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Freckled Frogfish and Freckled Anglerfish, and formerly classified as Antennarius coccineus. They feed on small fish, crustaceans and worms, and grow to a length of about 12cm. Variable in color to match their surroundings.

Habitat:

Found singly on sheltered reefs with leaf litter, and on sandy bottoms with rich sponge growth, at depths of 5 to 75m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I took these photos at a depth of about 10m or so, during a day dive at Dayang Beach, Talikud Island, Davao, Philippines. This was about 5cm long. Too bad I couldn't get a full-body shot, because it was trying to camouflage itself among a couple of feather stars.

Could anyone confirm if this is truly Antennarius hispidus? Another source is saying that this could be Antennarius coccineus...
I've changed the ID for this one. I believe I've found more information to determine that this frogfish is, in fact, Antennarius hispidus.
Thanks, Marta! Yep, these critters are masters of camouflage when they're still very small. :)
Wow! Thumbs up! I bet it was not easy to find him, he is so very well mimetized!
