Field Notes

Description:

This is Kauri and this one in particular is called Tane Mahuta, or King of the forest. He is 2,000 years old. Because of the way they grow these trees do not have the typical tapered growing form that is seen in other conifers. The tree is self prunning and branches beneath the canopy are lopped off as they are inefficient at their function. Never try to climb one of these trees.

Habitat:

Are generally found as canopy emerging trees. The Kauri forests of old were milled to build ships for the British navy as Kauri timber is straight and with no knots like most other trees.
