Tunicate
26.3567, 127.732
Field Notes
Description:
Milky, translucent, gelatinous-looking spiral cylindrical-conical (like a loosely -rolled piece of paper) tunicate ~ 1 inch tall with black stripe on upper margin, possibly of the same consistency as a jellyfish; its narrower end is attached to a silty reef surface.
Habitat:
Near shore sub-tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.
Notes:
Spotted offshore of west coast of Okinawa; location shown is notional. Month and day notional, but correct within one month. There are some really "what-on-earth-is-this?" things out there--not scary, just peculiar--this was one of them. Original medium 35mm color slide taken with Nikonos III, close-up kit and flash; film later scanned and image saved as digital file.
