damp and shady places, rotting sticks

I'm not a fungi expert, but I'm wondering if this is tree ear fungus (Auricularia auricula). It has different appearances depending upon season, but see http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek020322.html for more information and see if this matches what you saw.
