Field Notes

Description:

this is an ornamental in a friend's yard near my home. This is the first time I saw the blooms.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica. This plant receives irrigation.

Notes:

This plant is well over ten feet high and the inflorescences are easily 7 inches without the stem.

I found it Edward. We were both right...so to speak. The Calathea and the Heliconia are Zingiberales
The major difference between this and the heliconia is that the inflorescenses come from one major stem. In this case there were 3 to 6 per stem depending on the age of the stem.
