Field Notes

Description:

An orange coloured butterfly about 5 to 6 cms long. Has distinct eye spots on both pairs of wings and dark edges along wings.
Pic #2 shows underside of wings.

Habitat:

Open woodlands, forest ranges and gardens.

Notes:

Very difficult to photograph as they don't seem to rest in one spot for long. Found in huge numbers over the last month.

Thanks martinl. I should have specified that the two pictures are not of the same butterfly but of the same species - you can tell from the different vegetation around. The female is from the back garden (Dandenongs) and the male is from Tambo Crossing !!.
The second one is a female and the first one is a male:)
