Field Notes

Description:

Large, brownish-yellow flowers with purple centers and veins. Foul-odored leaves are coarsely-toothed. 1-3 feet tall. Blooms June-July.

Habitat:

Common on roadsides and disturbed sites; dry open woods.

Notes:

This European native, annual or biennial, has been cultivated as an ornamental. Two rows of fruit appear early fall; each pineapple-shaped capsule contains hundreds of tiny black seeds. All parts of the plant are very poisonous.
