Krystel, I'm going to take that to mean you're not an 'insect kind of girl'. I'm with the guys on this one though. Thanks for the lead, Gordon, but I'm still unsure. Hope to find it soon.
This appears to be one of the meadowhawks (). Meadowhawks are really tough to ID. You might want to try bugguide.net at http://bugguide.net/node/view/522/bgimage?from=240 and paging through that section of the their website. One distinguishing characteristic of your sighting is that the face is entirely red. Many meadowhawks have white faces. There is, for instance, the cherry-faced meadowhawk which resembles your spotting, but I don't know if this is your subject.
