Field Notes

Description:

A very large owl with ear tufts, or "horns". Heavily barred beneath; conspicuous white throat bib. In flight, as large as larger hawks; appears neckless, large-headed.

Habitat:

Forests, woodlots, open country.

Notes:

Often active just before dark. Male usually utters five or six resonant hoots: hu-hu-hu-hu, hoo!, hoo! Females hoots slightly higher pitched, in shorter sequence. Young make catlike screams, especially when begging or when separated from adults in late summer and fall.
