Field Notes

Description:

Pale yellow head of ray flowers, about 2" across; slender, pointed green bracts extend beyond the ray flowers. Leaves erect and grasslike; stems coarse. 1-3' in height. Blooms late May to August.

Habitat:

Common on roadsides, disturbed sites, dry uplands.

Notes:

Also known as "Goat's Beard", a European native, is seldom a nuisance. Flowers open only in bright sunshine. Striking, dandelion-like, seed heads (puffballs with parachutes) are long-lasting and often used in winter bouquets. Young plants have been used as potherbs and greens, and Native Americans used the milky stem juice to remedy indigestion.
