Field Notes

Description:

This Cattle Egret is very well known here in the Philippines because of its close relationship with water buffaloes which are still used here in traditional farming. They pounce on any small prey items that the buffaloes disturb in the mud and they are often seen perched on the back of a buffalo as they play an important roll in reducing the number of parasitic ticks.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard, early in the morning looking for worms, in an area where the grasses had recently been cut down.

Yes, your right again, Mark. I only have two little books on birds - an "Eyewitness Handbook on Birds of the World" & "A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Southeast Asia" and they both show the southern tip of S. America on their distribution maps and the latter also shows them as present in far northern parts of China which are also very cold. The first book does not seem to show that. But I can't complain, I'm not even an expert on the birds in my own backyard :-) Thanks again. John B.
Good evening Mark, thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree, they do have an amazing distribution (in warm climates, I think on every continent) John B.
