You are right. Without the spider it seems impossible to me to identify it. I reckon that different species weaver the webs in very similar ways. Still, I already lernt a few things about sheet weaver spiders
I know what you mean, arlanda; these spieces are new to me also (even though I've probably seen these webs all my life). Unless you spot the spider itself, it's a tough call. Here's one from my front yard: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7304008
