Field Notes

Notes:

Distribution and description according to wikipedia:

"The genus is native to much of Europe, from western Great Britain, Spain and Portugal, eastward across the Mediterranean region and central Europe into Romania and Ukraine, and along the north coast of Turkey into the Caucasus. The greatest concentration of species occurs in the Balkans. One atypical species (H. thibetanus) comes from western China; another atypical species (H. vesicarius) inhabits a small area on the border between Turkey and Syria.

The flowers have five "petals" (actually sepals) surrounding a ring of small, cup-like nectaries (petals modified to hold nectar). The sepals do not fall as petals would, but remain on the plant, sometimes for many months. Recent research in Spain suggests that the persistent calyx contributes to the development of the seeds (Herrera 2005).

Although the flowers of some species may resemble wild roses (and despite some of their common names, such as "Christmas rose" and "Lenten rose"), hellebores do not belong to the rose family (Rosaceae)."

It's a lovely plant - one of my favorites but it can become a bit of a thug & completely take over if you don't prune it hard! Don't worry about lack of detailed photos for old spottings - there are lots of people here that enjoy the challenge! Now you know I'm sure there will be a lot more to go on for your future spots!
Hi Karen! Once again thanks and in the future I'll try to publish more than one photo... the thing is that, in some cases, I just have one photo of some flowers for the simple reason that when they were taken I wasn't thinking on these kind of project! So finally it's a "clematis Montana"... it's good to know!
Hi Laura! Now I've seen your other photos I can see this is actually a clematis Montana - either "Rubra" or "Elizabeth". As Antonio has said it's much easier to positively ID a plant if we can see the leaves & get a sense of scale!
Karen Thanks for your help! I realy need it and following my friend Tó I think it's better to post a few more photos of this flower to make it easier for you the ID. Any way thanks and have a nice day!
your wellcome Laura, any question ask,i pass here during the day a few times :-)
Tó Ginja Thanks a lot! You really helped me! I felt a litle lost, now I know how to proceed! So I'll try to follow what you just told me and I'll publish a few more photos of this same flower that maybe will help to identify in a clear way! Mais uma vez bigada pá e já agora Boa Festa de Aniversário e jocas muitas à quiduxa! ;)
Laura beautifull flower ,wellcome to project noah:-)the best way of making a spot easy to ID, is to put several photos(4 or 5) of the flower, of the plant, of the leafs,so the people who trie to ID can do it more easely.we wait for more spots. pronto:-) agora rapariga tens que ter calma(ás vezes demoram a identificar,é normal) e agradecer ás pessoas que te façam as identificações,e vais fazendo like no coraçãozinho que aparece no fundo esquerdo das fotos dos outros que vão aparecendo na página principal.vai a missions e inscreve-te naquelas em que aches que os teus spots se vão encaixar, exemplo:european flowers, mushroom maping, portugal's biodiversity:-)(nesta metes as fotos tiradas em portugal),etc...fala sempre em inglês mesmo comigo,só se for preciso por questões de pormenor como agora para te explicar tudo bem,ok?bjs
