Field Notes

Description:

A large kingfisher native to eastern Australia. 350mm long, cream coloured breast with copper brown back, wings and eye-mask, pale blue flashes on wings. Very distinctive 'laughing' call especially in groups.

Habitat:

Eucalyptus forest.

Notes:

I am so glad I didn't remove our dead gum trees after the long drought. This is the first nesting kooky family we have had in our back yard. Woohoo!
Pics of inside the nest yet to come (hopefully).
Added 2 eggs.

It's so heart warming to watch the pair of parents in action. A few times a day the male turns up in a nearby tree. He calls with a really quiet voice... brrrrr... brrrrr...brrrrrrrr..... She quietly comes to the entrance, flies up next to him, and the two break out into a raucous duet of laughing and cackling noises. They then fly off together somewhere presumably to hunt food. She usually returns within the hour.
She dashed off for a quick feed yesterday and gave me the opportunity to snap the two eggs she is sitting on. Another egg was found outside the entrance a few days ago broken.
