Description:

One of the lions I was privileged to observe as part of the lion monitoring project I was involved with as a volunteer. This male was fitted with a radio collar so that we could locate him using telemetry. We had to rely on good old fashioned tracking skills & a fair bit of luck to find the rest of the pride!

Habitat:

Eastern Cape, SA

Notes:

I couldn't resist sharing another photo of Mufasa, one of the lions we were monitoring during my stay in South Africa!

It was such an awesome experience Carol & I'm always happy to see a little reminder of my time in South Africa!
Combination of the singer and the lion and the song ,reduced me to tears!
Emma, I have seen the clip many times but watching it still brings a tear to my eyes! I can remember seeing exotic animals for sale in Harrods when I was child - thankfully that stopped many years ago.
Karen ,you have probably seen this clip. Thought I will share it. The singer Whitney Houston ,passed away yesterdayy. RIP Whitney . Love both Christian and Whitney. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqhJuwUukX8
Audobon probably is stressing this month to help the tired and hungry migratory birds. They posted a link on FB. So i decided to pass it on. Thanks for feeding the birds and other critters!!
Emma, every month is Feed the birds month round here! (and the squirrels, deer, foxes....!)
Feb is feed the bird month, please feed the birds . Pass on the message ,Thanks!! http://www.audublog.org/?p=6575
Thank you July! I loved South Africa but enjoyed Tanzania even more! I dream of going back too - I would love to visit Botswana while the Okavango delta is flooding to see all the amazing wildlife they have there. How cool that your 4 year old wants to go there!
Beautiful! The third one is my favorite. :) I went to South Africa for my honeymoon and dream of going again. I did not want to leave, lol. Last time I was in Africa, we went to Tanzania. I'm always talking of my trips, and my 4 year old 2 days ago said to me he wants to go there too, :).

I've added a couple more photos of Mufasa!
I will have to check that one out - thanks Emma!
@ Karen ,I enjoyed reading the 7 spiritual principals I learned from Lions. It is written by Gareth Patterson.
Thanks Emma! You nailed it Antonio! :)

I feel really old now! :) There are ways to travel more cheaply - you should look into some of the sponsorship trips they do for students, or maybe VSO if you are planning to take a bit of a break when you have finished your degree. http://www.vsointernational.org/
Woow. That was when I'm 2 years old. well I think I have to get my bachelor degree before going to Africa. and (of course) collecting money :D
Thanks Daniele! Yes he is a pretty boy but then his mate does most of the work & she lives up to her name "Scar"! Marsya, you should go if you get the opportunity - you will love it! I see you are from Jakarta - I spent 3 weeks traveling round Java in 1994. It's a wonderful country. Of course all my photos from that trip are 35mm prints!
I haven't seen such a good looking adult male in the wild Karen! Fantastic shot. I haven't uploaded mine yet but they are all very battered!
I love them too. Narnia and Disney's Lion King really make me want to have a travel to Africa. its big cats are awesome
Marsya yes he would make a good Aslan - though he would probably eat the kids instead of protecting them! The Chronicals of Narnia were my favorite books as a child!
Thanks guys! Carol, I only uploaded this one last night & just noticed I need to change the date of the spotting! I took so many photos in South Africa & Tanzania but unfortunately downloaded them on to my old PC which has since died. Luckily I had saved some of the best images on DVD!
Karen, How could I have missed this beautiful creature. Just fantastic! Wonderful photo. I had fun with all the African animals tonight!
That's because there were no other adult males on the reserve at that time so he didn't need to defend his territory!
