Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Lesser Celadine, this is a creeping flowering perennial from buttercup r(Ranunculaceae). It has dark green heart-shaped leaves, and bright yellow flowers with glossy petals. Number of petals varies.

Habitat:

One of the early bloomers, seen on edges of broadleaved forest (mainly oak). Mountain environment, just in between Jura Mountain and lake Geneva (Leman), right on the Swiss-French border.

Notes:

As most of buttercup family members, all parts of the plant are toxic, containing something called protoanemonin... At the same time, it is/was used in medicinal purposes; as a treatment for hemorrhoids and as a treatment against scorbut.
