Mallard

These pictures show how difficult it is to distinguish between the female Mallard and Black duck because they interbreed. The speculum is blue on some and purple on others. Image two the duck in the foreground is a real oddity with the light blue stripe on its cap. Also making it difficult, the male (drakes) species molt their feathers and develop an "eclipse" plumage, in which they look much like the females.
