Salicornia europaea

Field Notes
Description:
Picture is a before and after image of habitat restoration at the Walker Farm marsh in Barrington, RI. Undersized culverts and earthen farm roads caused a dieback of marsh vegetation. Construction of a new culvert in 2003 reestablished tidal flow and a colonization by salt-tolerant species. The first species to colonize were various Salicornia species. Salicornia are succulent plants that grow within coastal marshes. These salt-tolerant plants are actually edible.
Habitat:
Coastal salt marshes.
