Field Notes

Description:

A shrub that can grow to 3-5 meters. Compound, serrate leaves, with hairy stipules. The flowers are white and the hips (berries) are red.

Habitat:

Forested area

Notes:

The hairy stipules on this plant at the base of the leaf is what identifies it as multiflora rose. This is an invasive species from Asia that was originally brought over to the US as a conservation measure. This was a bad idea. Birds ate the berries and spread the seeds over a wide area and nature took care of the rest. It has since invaded many areas. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
