Field Notes

Description:

12-14 mm, brown, more than a little inconspicuous when on tree bark. The pronotum has blunt tubercles, separating it from a similar looking species, S. diadema. Its front legs and head have spines, hence the common name.

Habitat:

Forested slope. Sitting on Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).

Notes:

This is a very common species of assassin bug, in Ohio at least--I've seen it in many places. Viewed under a microscope, it looks pretty ferocious: the spines are formidable, and you wouldn't want to be an insect on the receiving end of those bad boys. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
