Field Notes

Description:

The only carnivorous butterfly in the world! It seldom or never visits flowers. The carnivorous larvae feed on woolly aphids. The adult butterfly can also pierce woolly aphids and drink their fluids (much like a spider eats its prey).

Habitat:

meadow

Notes:

I spotted this in Short Hills provincial park. I never knew such a butterfly existed.

This little beauty is in the same Family as Hairstreaks. It had me stumped for a bit as well. What a wonderful find!
