Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Nymphaliini; Junonia hedonia ida Cramer, 1775. Despite the fact that the Junonia hedonia ida appears in various shades of colour, from brownish orange to chocolate brown with markings which range from fairly sharp and distinct to rather subtle and faint, it is somehow easy to recognise even at some distance. This specimen, which I saw this morning, was unmistakeable even in its slightly tattered condition.

Habitat:

I spotted this Brown Pansy on a tangle of weeds on uncultivated ground beside an old farmhouse.
