Description:

tree was 4-5' high. small, thick leaves

Habitat:

sound estuary/maritime thicket at Jockey's Ridge State Park

Notes:

At first I thought holly, but maybe oak? Park website http://www.jockeysridgestatepark.com/ecology.html says there are red oak. Everything looks different when stunted by wind, sand, and salt.
