Field Notes

Description:

Snowy Egrets are a medium-sized egret long with thin legs and a long, slender bill, and fluffy white plumage. An interesting fact about the Snowy Egrets is that it's plumage was once so highly sought after by the fashion industry that it fetched a price of $32 an ounce in 1886, twice the price of gold. Reforms were passed in the 20th century and Snowy Egrets have since recovered to stable levels.

Habitat:

Snowy Egrets often nest in isolated, heavily vegetated areas near water such as barrier islands, dredge-spoil islands, salt marsh islands, swamps, and marshes. Snowy Egrets are most often spotted at Spring Lake during the summer during their breeding season.
