Description:

2 1/4" inch long attractively striped brown cream & pink millipede.

Notes:

I found this guy in the earth of a hole I was digging to plant a tree.

This may be in the genus Sigmoria, but I can't be 100% sure from a photo.

Millipedes don't bite so I have no problem handling them - centipedes can give a nasty nip though so I leave them well alone! :)

It's a shame you didn't put it under UV light, it's even prettier then. ;)

Thanks Latimeria! This was the closest I could find on bugguide but I would appreciate the correct ID! It is the prettiest millipede I've seen!

Karen, I don't think you have the correct ID for this millipede. The page you linked to is to a millipede in a different order, Spirobolida. This millipede is in the Order Xystodesmida, denoted by the paranota (the wing-looking structures coming out above the legs). I believe I've found this millipede in the past few months actually. I'll upload some pictures soon and get back to you on the ID--yell at me if I don't soon!
