Description:

Black-bodied sea urchin, 2-3 inches across, with thick, white-gray spines, on flat rock bottom.

Habitat:

Near shore sub-tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotted offshore of west coast of Okinawa; location shown notional. Date shown is notional, but correct to within two weeks. Original medium photoprint, taken with Nikonos III using flash and close-up kit; print subsequently scanned and image saved as digital file.
