Description:

There were several in the area, ranging from approx. 15~25mm.

Habitat:

Grasses and flowers that provide pollen.

Notes:

S. fascinata is well documented in Japan.

ForestDragon, I had a look here: http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/wasps/scoliid_wasps.htm and I think you're right on target. I also had a closer look at the photos I took. The airborne one shows mandibles that a dipteriid wouldn't have. I will try to narrow down the species. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! :D

Hi Audie, I want to say that this may actually be a wasp. It looks a lot like a species of Scoliid Wasp (Family Scoliidae). They are beautiful wasps and are often quite hairy. I am unfamiliar with the insects in your area, so, hopefully, someone with more knowledge than me can help you further.
