Field Notes

Description:

This image compares a beetle from the mountains and the smaller more common version. These are tiny beetles and quite easily missed.

Habitat:

Open forest.

Notes:

Paropsis annularis is the smaller one and I have found this primarily at Mt Lofty. I have found Paropsisterna gloriosa country areas including Gisborne, Taggerty, Eildon and Mt Lofty.
Paropsis nobilitata was found in Heyfield and Mt Hedrick.

We are tending to think the second (larger) specimen is a different species (Paropsisterna nobilitata). It is identical to all specimens recorded from Tasmania where only Paropsisterna nobilitata occurs.

Shall I send you one? (I mean two) These seem to prefer yellow box, which you would call 'silver dollar' and not the 'proper' green leaved gums with the smooth bark "silver tops". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_polyanthemos You do have that Eucalyptus in California. Have a look on them. Maybe you have them already.

Thanks Charlie. You should be able to find this one in Tassie. You also have another one called P. nobilitata with more spots, I tihnk.
