Good to know that he does not have to infertile! I thought that its blue feathers are beautiful. It did not feel like the Odd Duck Out. It was very comfortable with the mallards and Canadians.
Your knowledge of ducks is amazing!! I would be totally lost!
This bird is not fully Muscovy, but it definitely has Muscovy in its heritage. It looks to have some Call Duck genes in it, hence the small bill. Also, many bird hybrids, especially duck hybirds are not infertile.
Hi Emma. I have been around. Just yesterday in fact I posted our first Christmas beetle of the season: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8103135
Last week we were up in the northeast corner of the island, so I've got about a dozen shots of flora and fauna from there that still need posting.
With the caruncle (the flesh above the bill) that's definitely a muscovy. The domestic ones come in nearly any conceivable color (I currently have pieds in black, tan, bronze, and blue). And white markings are the norm. Another possibility is that it is a muscovy cross. Muscovies can interbreed with other ducks, but the off-spring is infertile (a 'mule').
been consulting a bird guide generalist about birds of the world and i fin a Muscovy duck like your's but brown instad of black, but there says that the wild variety is almost black in except the wings that have white spread like your's so i put my vote in Muscovy duck( Cairina moschata)
