Description:
The male of this species is unmistakable when spotted in flight, with bright orange tips on the forewing. The underside of the hindwing is mottled green and white for both genders, providing good camouflage. Also striking are green eyes speckled with black.This species overwinters as a pupa for up to 10 months.
Habitat:
Forest clearing. The last shot shows the habitat with a first glimpse of the butterfly.
Notes:
Food plants include Cardamine pratensis and Alliaria petiolata. Adult orange-tip butterflies are on the wing from about mid-April to mid-June. Females lay a single egg on each visited plant.
