Field Notes

Description:

Small and brightly coloured typical kingfisher, azure-blue above and bright rufous bellow.

Habitat:

Seen in totally urban and densely populated Cox's Bazar, fishing in small ponds.

Notes:

I'm pretty much enjoying seeing these fellas and gals when walking to and from the office. I must admit the Cox's is not really the most pleasant place to walk, because of the pollution, unsolved garbage and sewage problems... and traffic, too; but the encounters of this sort compensate a lot. The interesting thing for me was that I tried real hard to see this kingfisher in Europe, and I managed a couple of times - but never managed a decent pics; and here... I see them almost every day...

Awesome spotting, Zlatan. Kinsfishers are amazing birds. This one seems to have an exceptionally long beak, and such striking colours. Great notes too. A great pity they live in such a heavily polluted urban environment. I wonder if it has caused the birds any genetic defects?
