Fall Webworm (Caterpillar)
Hyphantria cunea
34.06, -84.54
Field Notes
Description:
Fall webworms come in two races with slightly different coloration. This orange-headed specimen is an example of the southern race. I spotted it on the ground in a flower garden under a large hickory tree and near a wooded area with many other trees which are all known host plants for this species.
Habitat:
The moth is native to North America, ranging from Canada to Mexico. (Accidentally introduced from North America to Yugoslavia in the 1940s, and has since spread throughout Europe; later introduced to northern China and North Korea.)
Notes:
Spotted in a backyard flower garden in Kennesaw, GA
