Field Notes

Description:

These were the prettiest galls that I've ever seen!

They were fluffy, white ball with pink spots and was about 4-5 cm across. One gall is actually a group of smaller, hairy galls that are joined at a common spot on a twig. They can be pulled apart to see seed-like structures that contain the developing wasps.

Habitat:

I spotted 6 galls growing on Oak (Quercus sp.) - probably White Oak (Quercus alba).

Great spotting and quite fascinating. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks Jim and Leuba! I uploaded a photo of the seed-like parts that are found in the middle of the gall. These "seeds" contain the developing wasps.
Fantastic find Christine ! Quercus have some amazing galls -we don't have any here of course. Very pretty.
I agree, Christine...pretty, and nice spotting!
Thanks Brian and Sukanya! It was so beautiful. It felt fluffy, yet a bit sticky.
Gall! So pretty...I could wear it in my hair!!!
Great spotting Christine! Galls in general interest me, but this one is something else!!
