Description:

maybe 3/4 inch, appears to have beetle-like mandibles

Habitat:

spotted under the bark of dead loquat tree

Notes:

The kittens were playing on the tree and knocked away a piece of bark exposing this insect.

I thought that it might be a beetle. Thanks for the confirmation, martini. I had concidered keeping it, but when I went back later it was gone. I suspect it became bird fodder.
This is the pupa of a beetle. The larvae often feed on rotting wood. It would be very interesting (to some of us) to keep it in a jar with a lid and photograph the beetle when it emerges. This may take some weeks. You can release it immediately.
