Field Notes

Description:

An elegant and distinctive bird when seen well but plumage, and babit of creeping along ground, can make it surprisingly well camouflaged. When feeding on ground, adult appears mainly pinkish brown except for black and white barring on wings. However, in flight, is transformed by broad wings into striking black and white bird; the effect is emphasised by slow butterfly-like flight patterns.

Habitat:

Nests in tree holes and in holws in stone walls. Favours open agricultural land and areas of short grass. Year round resident in South Iberian Peninsula.

These are such lovely birds! Nice catch!
Thanks. :) This was a seriously lucky shot. I just stepped outside and the hoopoe was parading up and down the track, so I grabbed my camera quickly!
