Field Notes

Description:

This spider is about .5". It was demonstrating a ballooning behavior, which is they let a small strand of silk to the air in hopes of catching a draft so that they may migrate to another location. HOWEVER, what was amazing, is this wasn't just one spider. There was around 6 of the same species on my banana pepper plants, gathering around the top of the leaves and letting mass of silk out. Some of them did catch flight, which was quite amazing considering their size!!

Habitat:

In my backyard, in my garden where I often encounter leaf hoppers. My garden is located right next to the woods (about 10feet away) where an alpine/maple forest is located.

Notes:

Possibly a communal species, as when one of the spiders somehow encountered one and another on the plant, they would 'touch' each others legs, give a few drums with their front legs and pedilaps and not harm themselves, and then be on their way.
